10 Signs of Approaching Death That Caregivers Should Know

Recognizing the signs of approaching death helps children be more emotionally and spiritually prepared to care for their elderly parents with calmness and awareness.

1. Voice Fading Away

Individuals nearing death tend to speak less and spend more time in silence. They may only communicate through gestures or nodding. Being present with them while reciting prayers can provide comfort.

2. Loss of Appetite

A drastic decrease in appetite is common. They may refuse food or take only small sips of water. Offer small amounts of food and ensure their mouth stays moist.

3. Slow and Weak Pulse

The body feels cold, the pulse weakens, and blood pressure drops. Monitor their condition and ensure they remain comfortable.

4. Eyes Gazing Upward

This sign is often seen when they appear to be staring into the distance. Offer words of reassurance and encourage them to recite the declaration of faith.

5. Mentioning Deceased Loved Ones

They may mention names of those who have passed away, as if seeing them. Take this opportunity to pray for them and remind them of Allah's mercy.

6. Extreme Weakness

Their body becomes too weak to move. Ensure they are lying in a comfortable position and continue reciting the Quran by their side.

7. Frequent Bowel Movements

The body may begin to expel waste more frequently, with the stool appearing very dark. Provide gentle care to maintain their dignity.

8. Persistent Thirst

They may frequently ask for water but can only consume small amounts. Regularly moisten their lips to prevent dryness.

9. Unusual Requests

They may express unexpected cravings for certain foods or drinks. Fulfill their requests as long as it does not cause harm.

10. Extended Sleep

They tend to sleep longer and become difficult to wake. Stay by their side with prayers and words of remembrance.

Each of these signs is an opportunity to prepare our hearts and pray for our parents so they may return to Allah in a state of husnul khatimah (a good ending).
