10 Signs of Those Who Successfully Attain Husnul Khatimah

 
A good ending, or husnul khatimah, is the aspiration of every Muslim. It is a sign of acceptance and mercy from Allah SWT. Here are 8 signs indicating that someone has passed away in husnul khatimah.

1. Passing Away on Friday or Friday Night

Dying on Friday or its night is a sign of husnul khatimah. The Prophet SAW said:
مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يَمُوتُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَوْ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَّا وَقَاهُ اللَّهُ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ
Meaning: "No Muslim dies on Friday or its night except that Allah SWT will protect him from the trial of the grave." (Tirmidhi, 1074)

2. Uttering the Shahada Before Passing Away

Anyone whose last words are the shahada is assured of entering paradise. The Prophet SAW said:
مَنْ كَانَ آخِرُ كَلَامِهِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
Meaning: "Whoever's last words are 'There is no god but Allah,' will enter paradise." (Abu Dawud, 3116)

3. Passing Away with Sweat on the Forehead

A sign of a righteous believer's death is having sweat on the forehead. The Prophet SAW said:
مَوْتُ الْمُؤْمِنِ بِعَرَقِ الْجَبِينِ
Meaning: "The death of a believer is marked by sweat on the forehead." (Tirmidhi, 982)

4. Granted Taufiq and Guidance to Perform Good Deeds Before Death

Allah SWT grants the ability to perform righteous deeds before death as a sign of husnul khatimah. The Prophet SAW said:
إِذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِعَبْدٍ خَيْرًا اسْتَعْمَلَهُ قَالُوا: وَكَيْفَ يَسْتَعْمِلُهُ؟ قَالَ: يُوَفِّقُهُ لِعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ
Meaning: "If Allah wants good for His servant, He employs him in good deeds before his death." (Tirmidhi, 2142)

5. Passing Away by Drowning, Falling from Heights, or Martyrdom in the Path of Allah

Dying due to drowning, falling from heights, or being martyred in the path of Allah is considered a sign of husnul khatimah. The Prophet SAW said:
الشُّهَدَاءُ خَمْسَةٌ: الْمَطْعُونُ، وَالْمَبْطُونُ، وَالْغَرِقُ، وَصَاحِبُ الْهَدْمِ، وَالشَّهِيدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
Meaning: "There are five types of martyrs: those who die of plague, stomach disease, drowning, falling from heights, and dying in the path of Allah." (Bukhari, 652)

6. Passing Away During Childbirth

A woman who dies while giving birth is considered a martyr. The Prophet SAW said:
قُتِلَ الْمُسْلِمُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالطَّاعُونُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْبَطْنُ وَالْغَرَقُ وَالْمَرْأَةُ يَقْتُلُهَا وَلَدُهَا جَمْعًا
Meaning: "A Muslim who dies due to murder, plague, stomach illness, drowning, or a woman who dies during childbirth is considered a martyr." (Ahmad, 22684)

7. Passing Away Due to Stomach Illness

Anyone who dies from a stomach-related illness is classified as a martyr. The Prophet SAW said:
وَمَنْ مَاتَ فِي الْبَطْنِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ
Meaning: "Whoever dies due to stomach illness is a martyr." (Muslim, 1915)

8. Passing Away While Engaged in Righteous Deeds

Dying while performing acts of worship such as fasting, charity, or reciting the shahada is a sign of husnul khatimah. The Prophet SAW said:
مَنْ قَالَ: لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ، خُتِمَ لَهُ بِهَا، دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ، خُتِمَ لَهُ بِهَا، دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ، خُتِمَ لَهُ بِهَا، دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
Meaning: "Whoever says 'There is no god but Allah' sincerely for Allah's pleasure and their life ends with it, will enter paradise. Whoever fasts a day for Allah's pleasure and dies in that state, will enter paradise. Whoever gives charity sincerely for Allah's pleasure and dies in that state, will enter paradise." (Ahmad, 23372)
