Assalamualaikum,
Let’s get straight to it.
Most people burnout not because of the work...
But because they forget why they’re doing it.
Caring for aging parents is hard.
Really hard.
But the heart breaks faster than the body.
And when your intention slips from honouring to obligated.
That’s when everything starts crumbling.
Here are the 3 Most Important Truths every caregiver needs to survive (and thrive) in this role:
1. Reset Your Intention — Or Burn Out Fast
Before you buy another ergonomic wheelchair...
or buy another CCTV camera...
or ask a du'a air jampi from Ustaz...
STOP.
Ask yourself: Why am I doing this?
This isn’t about being the perfect child.
This is about fulfilling a sacred trust.
A role many wish they had — but few are chosen for.
Here’s what to do today:
“Allah is the best planner.
Whatever He has placed in front of me,
He chose it for me — because He loves me,
and because He knows I can carry it with His help.”
Say this every morning: “This is a gift.
Write your intention down.
Stick it on your fridge. Mirror. Anywhere visible.
When resentment creeps in (and it will), go back to that reminder.
2. Speak to Them Like They Matter (Because They Do)
You wouldn’t bark orders at your boss.
So don’t bark at your mother.
Elderly parents — especially those with dementia — are sensitive to your tone, eye contact and body language.
They will react the same way as to your energy.
Try this today:
Sit down. Meet them at eye level.
Speak slowly, gently, with warmth.
Don’t multitask while talking.
Use positive memories to anchor conversations.
Instead of “Mak, dah makan belum?!!!”
“Mak, saya masak bubur ayam tadi. Rindu nak makan ngan Mak.”
Yes. It's not easy.
Even if it takes 30 seconds for her to respond — wait.
Be present. Besar pahala.
3. Love Alone Is Not Enough. You Need Structure.
You can have the best heart…
But without systems, your love will get drowned by exhaustion.
Tomorrow, we’ll cover the #1 system that prevents caregiver chaos:
The Daily Routine.
It’s simple, powerful, and can prevent 70% of the problems you’re probably facing right now.
But for today, start here:
Reset your intention. Speak with honour. It's about the khidmah.
This isn’t a test of your performance.
It’s a test of your soul.
You’ve got this. And you’re not alone.
Wassalam,
Shahib & Azura
