How My Father's Verbal Promises Led to a Family Feud We Never Expected
Planning for the future doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated if you take it step by step.
1. Start with a Simple Checklist
Breaking down the process into small, manageable steps makes it easier to begin.
Instead of trying to handle everything at once, start with a checklist of key documents such as your will, Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), and insurance policies. Prioritize what needs immediate attention and tackle one item at a time.
Here are six essential items to include in your checklist:
1- Identify Your Assets: List down all your properties, savings, investments, and personal belongings you want to allocate.
2- Prepare a Will: Specify how you want your assets distributed and who will manage your estate.
3- Set Up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA): Designate someone to handle your financial and medical affairs if you're unable to do so.
4- Review Your Insurance Policies: Ensure beneficiaries are updated and coverage meets your family’s needs.
5- Organize Important Documents: Keep all legal papers such as property deeds, identification, and insurance records in one secure location.
6- End-of-Life Wishes: Document personal preferences regarding medical treatments, funeral arrangements, and charitable donations (waqaf).
A checklist provides clarity and helps you stay organized without feeling overwhelmed.
2. Seek Professional Guidance Early
Getting expert advice can simplify the process and prevent costly mistakes.
Many people delay estate planning because they don't know where to start. A lawyer or estate planner can guide you through legal requirements, ensuring your plans are properly documented and legally sound. They can also offer practical solutions tailored to your needs.
The Quran reminds us:
فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
"So ask those who have knowledge if you do not know." (Surah An-Nahl, 16:43)
Having the right support makes planning less intimidating and more effective.
3. Involve Your Family in the Process
Open communication helps align expectations and avoid confusion later.
Sharing your plans with family members early on ensures they understand your intentions and can offer valuable input. It also prevents potential disputes and gives everyone peace of mind knowing what to expect.
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized:
كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْؤُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ
"Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock." (Bukhari, 893)
Involving your family fosters cooperation and trust in your planning.
Planning for the future is a gift to yourself and your loved ones. Take it step by step, seek help when needed, and remember that every small action brings you closer to peace of mind.
